S.T.E.M. is for everyone!

Greetings, fellow citizens of Del State's S.T.E.M. Nation!

Welcome to S.T.E.M. is for Me!, a bi-weekly blog for and by S.T.E.M. Teaching Assistants, and TA-tutors, instructors, students, advocates and friends!

The purpose of this blog is to provide a place for students to converse about how they have come to experience S.T.E.M. - science, technology, engineering and mathematics - in their daily lives. It's all about tying it all together and individually finding relevance, and purpose through a healthy appreciation for the sciences and mathematics.

We want to change the thinking of students who may have, at one time or another, thought that they could never get into the sciences, could never understand it and - in some cases - were intimidated by it whenever confronted with having to take STEM courses. Whoever you are, wherever you come from: S.T.E.M. is for you, too!

In the coming weeks and months, we aim to give you a different perspective on S.T.E.M.. We will share profiles of folks who may have started out just like you but now study and have chosen careers, engaged in research, and lifestyles immersed in the sciences and mathematics. We will also include some favorite links, review study techniques and provide a calendar of upcoming events (both on and off-line) that might be of interest to you.

So: Let's Get Started!

In our next post, we will begin this blog by profiling students who are actively making a difference in helping to encourage inclusion of all students in  science, technology, engineering and mathematics courses at Delaware State University. These students are Teaching Assistants, a.k.a., TAs, and TA/tutors (TAs-in-training). They are comprised of primarily graduate students, and/or talented juniors and seniors who act as S.T.E.M. liaisons or, as we call them "S.T.E.M. Ambassadors", between instructors and students. They teach labs, some introductory-level courses, run recitations, and study sessions, grade homeworks, and papers. They also hold office hours - like faculty - in order to be available to assist students either one-on-one or in small groups.

Stay tuned!

In the meantime, if you have a story you would like to share about why S.T.E.M. is so important to you, email us at dsustem@desu.edu. We maintain the right to edit (but not distort) content posted on this website.

Yours truly,

Ms. Vanessa D. Nesbit, Editor/Curator
Activity Director, Title III Revitalizing Excellence & Expectations in Math & Science
